The effects of neurotoxic and neurotrophic factors and the role of electrochemical signals were investigated using the nesting multiple electrode array chamber (MEA) model. The MEA model involves two interconnected chambers for culturing cells on top of multiple electrodes. It was observed that isolated spinal cord neuronal cells and DRGs, grown in modified Bottenstein and Sato's culture medium (BSF-2) in 5% FCS were cultured on either side of the chamber in close proximity to the grooves. The results show that both DRG and mixed neuronal cells successfully grew on coated MEAs and exhibited neurite extensions through the channels.
