Overall, 70-80% of patients with persistent insomnia benefit from CBT, and sleep improvements are maintained over time. CBT has been shown to be effective also in older adults, in primary care patients, and in people who have some associated medical anti psychiatric conditions. There remains a need for more effective dissemination and more widespread use of these validated CBT approaches. CBT has the potential to transform the first-line management of insomnia when used alone or in combination with rational pharmacotherapy.
